What is Mesotherapy?

For those who find liposuction “too much”, or those who have already had liposuction, and now find fat depositing in other areas as well as cellulite that’s worse than before, non-invasive Mesotherapy for fat loss and body contouring is the perfect answer.

Mesotherapy is an exciting therapy in aesthetic medicine that has revolutionized the treatment of fat and cellulite removal without surgery. Mesotherapy treatments are safe, non-invasive, out-patient procedures.

Mesotherapy, developed in France in 1952 by Dr. Michel Pistor, is a method of multiple injections of vitamins, minerals, medications, and amino acids placed just under the surface of the skin. Mesotherapy has been widely used in France for the last 50 years and is also taught in Medical Schools around the world.

Mesotherapy has a variety of applications which include: reduction of localized fat, cellulite treatment, breast/face/neck rejuvenation, and pain reduction. Therefore, the injected solution is individually prepared depending on the localization and purpose of the treatment.

Mesotherapy for localized fat loss or cellulite can be applied to any part of the body, such as: face, chin, arms, saddlebags, love handles, hips, abdomen, buttocks, legs and any area of unwanted fat accumulation. NOTE: Mesotherapy for localized fat loss done above the shoulders does require the patient to take a prescription of Solumedrol, therefore, Dr Grady does not do Mesotherapy for localized fat loss in these areas.

Unlike other medical treatments, Mesotherapy is administered directly to the desired area. This limits side effects, reduces the possibility of drug interactions, and allows for a substantial reduction in the amount of medicine utilized for each procedure. The Mesotherapy for localized fat loss or cellulite treatment melts the fat via injections and breaks up the network of connective tissue fibers that normally trap fat cells and form cellulite.

Have the medicines used in Mesotherapy been FDA approved?

All the medicines used in Mesotherapy are FDA approved but their use in Mesotherapy is considered off-label. This is a common situation. An example of an off- label use of a medication is Botox. Botox was originally FDA approved for controlling muscle spasms, but for over 20 years physicians used it to treat wrinkles prior to FDA approval for this particular usage.

Are Mesotherapy treatments painful?

The majority of patients tolerate the procedure well, having small discomfort in the treated area. Those who are more sensitive require topical creams to decrease the discomfort level.

How is the Mesotherapy procedure done?

The actual treatment is quite simple. The area to be treated is first cleansed, then using a very thin needle (4mm-1/2 in. long) and a syringe, medications are placed over the problem area. Finally, the area is dried and the patient can return to daily activity. In the case of the Mesotherapy for localized fat loss or cellulite, the area is massaged to circulate the ingredients before the patient is sent home.

What are the side effects of Mesotherapy?

In the case of the Mesotherapy for localized fat loss or cellulite, the side effects are generally limited to some swelling, brief itching, bruising and some soreness. The swelling, bruises, and soreness usually fade in a couple of days, while the itching usually fades within the first hour. Very hot showers/baths, heating pads, and hot tubs should be avoided for 48 hours. Compressive garments should be avoided until swelling is gone.

In the case of the Mesotherapy for pain relief or breast/face/neck rejuvenation, because the ingredients are purely homeopathic, there may be some
slight bleeding at the time of injection, and the occasional bruise.

How many treatments do I need?

This will vary on your personal goals and condition. The average number of treatments ranges from 3-12, depending on the area being treated and the amount of change desired.

When will I see results?

Typically, results are seen after the second or third treatment. Results may vary based on the type and severity of the condition and body type of the patient. In some cases (like with pain relief) you may see results immediately.

How much does each Mesotherapy treatment cost?

Considering that not every person may be treated, the first consultation is free. In the case of the Mesotherapy for localized fat loss or cellulite it is $175.00 per syringe needed. A syringe generally covers an area equivalent to a hand with outstretched fingers.

The cost for Mesotherapy for breast/face/neck rejuvenation is $60 per treatment. The cost for Mesotherapy for pain relief is $20 per treatment.

NOTE: We do offer discounted packages for those who are committing to do several treatments.

Are Mesotherapy procedures permanent?

Mesotherapy for pain relief and breast/face/neck rejuvenation is considered permanent as it resolves the cause of the issue being treated. Because life is didactic, occasional boosters may be desired as further damage may be done in these areas.

The treatment for localized fat loss or cellulite is designed to get rid of stored fat and break collagen bands, so as long as all of the issues that may have caused the storage of fat (overeating, lack of exercise, or hormonal imbalance) have been resolved and the patient is no longer gaining weight, the treatment is considered permanent.

Who is a good candidate for Mesotherapy?

Any adult between the ages 16 to 75 who is in good health is a potential candidate for Mesotherapy and may benefit from localized fat spot reduction, and cellulite reduction.

The ideal candidate for Mesotherapy is someone who exercises regularly, is within 25 pounds of ideal body weight, and has normal deposits of fat or cellulite that haven’t responded to diet and exercise.

What areas of the body can be treated by Mesotherapy?

Abdomen Buttocks Love handles
Ankles Hands Saddle Bags
Arms Inner Thigh Bulge Stomach Pouch
Back Knee Pads Waist
Bra Bulge Legs

Should anything special be done prior to a Mestotherapy treatment?

It is recommended that a high protein meal be eaten before the treatment. Any foods or beverages containing caffeine, cold tablets that contain antihistamines as well as anti-inflammatory medications should be avoided the day of treatment. Some examples of antihistamines are Benadryl, Zyrtec, Claritin, Tavist and Allegra. Some examples of anti-inflammatory are Naprosyn, Motrin, Advil and Aleve. If diet medications are used, it is suggested you ask the physician whether they should be taken on the day of the procedure.

Mesotherapy VS Liposuction:

Compared to liposuction, Mesotherapy is very affordable. Other cellulite reduction methods like Synergie or Endermologie improve cellulite but the results last only a short time, requiring the expense of endless re-treatments. Liposuction costs between $5,000 to $10,000 per session. In addition, liposuction has the additional expense of lost wages as your recovery may prevent you from going to work for up to 2 weeks. Recovery following liposuction is painful and long. Liposuction is a surgical and invasive procedure that involves downtime, but has the advantage that it can be performed in one sitting. Mesotherapy is performed every three weeks, in any given area, for an average of 4-6 sessions but involves no downtime and less risk (although, some people may see a good result after just 1-2 sessions). Mesotherapy is a safe, nonsurgical technique for significant weight loss, spot weight reduction, and for eliminating cellulite from heavy thighs, abdomen, hips and buttocks. Mesotherapy has no downtime or lost wages. In ten weeks, targeted areas can be reduced up to six inches by melting fat under the skin.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction involves the surgical removal of pockets of fat to contour an area of the body. It is performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure. A tube called a cannula is inserted through an incision in the skin and fat cells are suctioned out. Intravenous fluids are given to replace bodily fluids lost during the treatment. Liposuction carries risks for anyone with medical problems such as diabetes, heart or lung disease or poor circulation.

It is common to have significant bruising and discomfort after liposuction and patients must plan to be home for at least 2 weeks after the treatment is performed.

Liposuction is a useful and popular procedure, and is commonly performed in conjunction with Mesotherapy.

What are some other differences between Mesotherapy and Liposuction?

Liposuction removes fat cells from given areas of the body while Mesotherapy empties the fat cells which is then excreted. After a liposuction procedure, there is a risk of fat being redeposited in areas of the body that were not problematic before the procedure. For example, a patient who had liposuction done on the hips and buttocks may gain weight afterwards on the back or shoulders. This has not been the case with Mesotherapy .

Liposuction may leave a lumpy appearance to the skin in area that was treated. The skin is left smooth after Mesotherapy. Mesotherapy is commonly used after liposuction to correct the irregularities left after liposuction.

Mesotherapy is non-surgical and it doesn’t require general anesthesia, compressive wraps, hospitalization, etc. Another big difference is that Liposuction does not treat cellulite while Mesotherapy does.

What is cellulite?

Cellulite is a condition that gives a lumpy, dimpled appearance to the skin, especially on the hips, buttocks and legs. It affects 95% of post-pubescent women and the majority of women over age 21. Cellulite is not limited to women who are overweight and is commonly found in slim females. Again, cellulite is not a disease of excess weight, though this may aggravate the condition. It is also not caused by lack of exercise or improper diet.

Cellulite is created by the poor micro -vascular circulation experienced with declining estrogen levels, a weakening of connective tissue in the area, fat herniation and lymphatic congestion. It is also caused by fat accumulation and fluid retention.

Fat cells in the subcutaneous layer of the skin are arranged in chambers, divided by connective tissue elements called septae. As the fat cells in each chamber absorb water and excess fat they enlarge and stretch through the connective tissue walls. The connective tissue hardens, retracts and the skin in the area becomes inflexible. What results is the “cottage cheese” appearance to the skin.

Dr. Grady actually uses an ingredient that “pokes” holes in these septae allowing the fat to escape and instantly decrease the appearance of cellulite.

People have spent a great deal of money on the promise of decreased cellulite only to be disappointed by the lack of results. Mesotherapy is the only true therapy today that improves the appearance of cellulite.

Is Mesotherapy unsafe for anyone?

Yes. Mesotherapy is unsafe for women who are pregnant or nursing, or anyone who is on blood thinners, insulin-dependent diabetics, cancer or AIDS patients.
